HITCON DEFENSE 2019,
one of the biggest CTF
in Taiwan.
Summary
I led the interface design, opening animation, and collaborated with a team to design the venue.
We were up against a super short deadline and small budgets, so every decision has to be fast and accurate.
Luckily, the outcome is very successful. Many audiences were impressed by the design of the event.
Goal
-
Promote the concept of information security to the general public.
-
The client wants to be differentiated from a typical information security competition.
-
The TA of the merchandise is office workers. The merchandise shall be useful and easy to store in the office desk as a referral of HITCON DEFENSE.

Non stop!
After brainstorming with our client, instead of a traditional dark theme CTF, we decided to do some breakthroughs:
-
We choose a tropical island as the theme, which includes a lot of bright and high contrast colors.
-
We use some metaphors.
-
The story background is an engineer to visit an island for vacation. However, a Krekan attacks the island. So the engineer has to stand up to fight against it.
-
Each defense team will get a company to maintain. We design their booth as an island and the team members role-play as the defender of the island.
-
-
I came up with the slogan "Non stop" to corresponds to the reality of the information security industry.
-
It can combine other words and become some catchy slogans like"Surprise non-stop" and "Debug non- stop".
-
Hackers won't stop attacking cause you're not ready. Protecting information security shall be a must-do.
-
2 Venue
The competition took place on the 14th floor of Taipei New Horizon so participants need to take an elevator to reach the 14th floor. While designing the flow and venue, we spent a lot of time discussing with technical staff to reach the balance of aesthetics and practicality.
3 Interface
The interface consists of two parts, the main screen, and each team’s monitor.
Main screen
-
Defense team
-
Each defense team owns an island.
-
Each Island has five houses corresponding to their service which will be burned down while service is shut down.
-
The island will flood if they fail to survive the attack.
-
-
Attack team
-
I discussed with the attack team about their attack schedule and classify those attacks into 2 types - one-off attack and continuous attack.
-
Tentacle strike represents a one-off attack and tsunami represents a continuous attack.
-

The status of the team will be shown on each team's monitor.
Official website
Since the website is the first point of contact for participants, the homepage is designed to create an impression of landing on a resort island, blending an aviation and tech-inspired atmosphere.
It provides an overview of the competition format, objectives, and the overall event schedule.

4 Opening Animation

5 Merchandise
The merchandise will be sold and given to the participant and honored guest as a souvenir. We set the following points as our goal:
-
The appearance must be associate with the event.
-
The merchandise should be useful for office workers.
-
The price must be affordable for the general public.

I designed six acrylic business card stands according to the islands' appearance. The size is around 5*5*5 cm and suitable for being a decoration for the general office desks.
